常用用法

further作動詞時的基本意思是“促進,助長”。
further是far的比較級，而farther是further的一個變種，兩者之間有一些區別：表示“額外的，增加的，進一步時”further的用法比farther來的普遍，如further delay ,further details等很少用farther。在表示“距離”時，farther的用法比further來的普遍，如the farther side of the river。farther用作動詞極不普遍。

1.這兩個詞都是far的比較級,在英式英語中這兩個詞皆可表示距離,有時可以換用。例如:
We had to travel farther〔further〕 than I had expected.我們衹好走得比我們預計的更遠。
2.在美式英語中,表示地點上的距離衹能用farther,不能用further。
3.further可用作抽象含義,用來表示程度和分量,意思是“進一步的”“深層的”“更多的”; 而farther衹能表示地點上的具躰距離,不能用作抽象含義。
4.從詞源來看, farther是far的比較級, further是fore或forth的比較級。在現代口語中, farther和further實際上已混用,但further更爲人們所採用,而farther有漸趨消亡之勢。

這三個詞的共同意思是“促進”,都用作及物動詞。它們之間的區別是：
1.advance強調的是傚果; promote強調的是外界的有利條件。例如：
Selfless patriots advanced the cause of liberation.無私的愛國者促進了解放事業的發展。
A good example serves to promote good manners in the young.好榜樣可促使青年人講禮貌。
2.advance的動機一般是好的; 而promote有時指帶有特殊動機的援助。例如：
He promoted his own welfare at the expense of others.他不惜以他人利益爲代價換取自己的利益。
3.promote一般指發展積極因素; advance主要指發展積極因素,偶爾可指消極的副作用; further則不帶任何色彩,既可指發展積極因素,也可指追求消極目的。例如：
We'll do all we can to further your plans.我們將竭盡全力推進你的計劃。
Crisis conditions furthered the spreading of rumours.危機更加劇了這種謠言的傳播。
